David McMillan Joins Benz Gallery

The Benz Gallery welcomes David McMillan!

Get to know a bit about David in his own words…

From scratch and made by hand. Process matters.

I throw my pots on a kick wheel, revelling in the slower rhythms of a human powered machine. My pottery is made using only natural materials from Manitoba and fired in a wood burning kiln. The places my materials come from have a history and a felt presence in the final products. Fireclay from the foothills of Riding Mountain, salacious sand from and ancient delta near Brandon, glacial till from the Interlake, and wood ashes from my kiln. I take pride in harvesting my own materials and am involved in all of the processing required to make a truly local, sustainable and unique product.

This is Manitoba pottery. The colour palette is made possible by the natural plant and mineral landscape of Manitoba. My process is underpinned with a strong sustainability ethic. Therefore, some common glaze colours which require mining, smelting, or large scale industrial processes will not be found in my work.

The combination of my materials and specific firing process leads to natural variation. As a result, no two pieces are exactly the same.
